On April 20, 2017, Western Michigan University released its' headlining play, The Wiz!  “The Wiz is an urbanized remake of the classic 1900’s children’s movie The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" in the context of modern African-American culture.” -WMU News.  Williams Theatre gave the perfect setting for such an interactive, high-energy production. With its seating arranged in 4-sectional bleachers surrounding the stage, it truly placed the audience in the center of it all.  I was lucky enough to be front row and center!
Different from the norm, the predominately African-American cast, packed the Williams Theatre, with a sold out show. Tiffany Hubbard instantly captured the hearts of audiences as she embraced the lead role as Dorothy. Her co-cast definitely grabbed the spotlight as they brought Motown to the infamous yellow brick road!
FUN FACT: Tiffany Hubbard happens to be my good friend and next year roommate! Soo cool!

SHOCKING SURPRISE…WHO IS THE WIZ?
Definitely, pushes against the boundaries we have created to rigid social norms!

The musical definitely kept the audience at the edge of their seats, as the WMU production team staged a party in Oz!
Now what is Oz without the Wizard? And what’s a Party without…Drag? Yes, is sad DRAG! WMU Theatre truly went against the norm when they introduced “the Wiz” to be a fabulous drag queen with sassy attitude and amazing voice. The audiences absolutely loved the unexpected performance. Nevertheless, surprises did not end here! The Wicked Witch of the West was also enlightened the party with some Drag Performances. The audience loved the production praising the cast with a stand ovation at the conclusion of the show!
Go Theatre Broncos!
